MEETING OF 11th JUNE - Summer Social |
|
To celebrate our first year we decided to have a Summer Social at the home of Nigel Lewis-Baker, one of the founders of Topic of Cancer. We invited guest speakers, friends and supporters to join our celebration and so twenty two of us enjoyed a fun evening of music and chat with members bringing some very tasty contributions to the table. Quiches, pasta, savoury finger foods, salads among the starters with the most delicious brownies, spiced pears and cakes to follow on with wine and soft drinks. A veritable feast.
The day began with overnight rain running into the morning but luckily it cleared up at mid-day. Many thanks to Steve and Patrick for giving their time to help us set up the gazebos allowing Nigel and his wife, Janet, to get the rest of the preparations sorted before people started to arrive.
The evening was launched with a wonderful hour of pan music from our local junior steel band 'Pandemonium', a group of very talented young musicians playing a beautiful and varied programme. Everyone was sorry to see them pack up and leave and they now have even more fans who are looking forward to hearing them play again. Our great appreciation to Nicky Fairey and the band, who will be appearing at Bookham Village Day, as usual.
Our thanks go to John for the loan of the gazebo and to all the members who contributed so much to a very successful evening. Thanks to all our guest speakers and supporters who made the last twelve months so interesting and enjoyable, and thanks to whatever power ensured the sun shone us for a memorable celebration.
Next month Jen Twydell has agreed to come back with more ideas on healthy foods for the summer. Last time she actually prepared a tasty pasta whilst talking about healthy eating and giving us advice on recipes and no-go areas for our diets. We hope to see you all back at The Preston Cross Hotel on Thursday, July 13th at 8pm.
